The Journey of American Indian Education: A Five-Year Review of American Indian Education Laws, Policies and Initiatives is a newly released resource that delves into the collaborative work between the American Indian Policy Institute (AIPI) and the Center for Indian Education (CIE) at Arizona State University. Covering the period from 2019 to 2024, the review provides background information, setting the stage for an in-depth analysis of Indian education laws, policies, and executive orders, offering a clear picture of the legislative and policy developments impacting American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
By examining K-12 education reforms, higher education policies, and initiatives focused on language preservation, the review highlights both significant progress and persistent challenges in promoting educational equity for Native American students. It further explores the historical context of federal-tribal relations, emphasizing the importance of the federal trust responsibility and policies designed to advance cultural preservation and self-determination.The document not only serves as an important tool for understanding the history of Indian education and policies but also showcases how AIPI and CIE are committed to supporting Indigenous education systems and honoring Tribal sovereignty. Through this work, AIPI and CIE hope to foster future opportunities for Native learners across various educational landscapes. AIPI and CIE encourage Indigenous-serving professionals, students, and community members to explore this comprehensive review, which provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of Native education.
