January 7 2025. We have asked the Unit Three Tribal Board Members and the Chairman to explain to Unit Three Members how it is that many of Unit Three Members are enrolled as Sault Tribe Members but may belong to the Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians.
Did the Sault Tribe go out of their way to enroll Mackinac Bands Members to make sure that the State of Michigan Recognized Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians Federal Recognition efforts are hindered while financially benefiting from their members? We honestly don't know. The closest thing we got to a reasonable answer is that a Mackinac Bands Family Member may have married a Sault Tribe Member and had children making their descendants eligible to be in either tribe. It is unclear if the Sault Tribe Board of Directors will provide a Letter of Support to the Mackinac Bands for their Federal Recognition Application as other State of Michigan Tribes have provided. What is clear is that if they don't provide a Letter of Support they will definitely appear to have questionable motives.
To support the Mackinac Bands Federal Recognition Application they are asking all Tribal Members in Michigan and across the U.S. take the Mackinac Bands Survey and consider providing them with a Letter of Support for their application, emailing it to information@mackinacband.com or mail it to PO BOX 250 St.Ignace Michigan 49781.
