Recall Petition to remove Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.

September 4 2024.

The Committee to Recall Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren filed its Recall Affidavit with the Navajo Nation Election Administration (“NNEA”), commencing the Recall Petition to remove Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren due to allegations of breach of fiduciary duty, incompetence, neglect of duties, and misconduct in office. This historic filing marks the first recall of its kind in the Navajo Nation.

Officially formed on September 3, 2024, the Committee has been diligently working to hold President Nygren accountable for actions that the Committee believes have compromised the integrity and performance of the Navajo Nation Office of the President. The committee has cited numerous instances of alleged failures, including:

• BREACHED HIS FIDUCIARY DUTY through misuse of hundreds of thousands of dollars of the People’s money by spending outside of the Navajo Nation Council approved budget for OPVP by hiring and paying contractors to serve him bypassing the Navajo Nation Procurement Code.

• LACKS COMPETENCE AND NEGLECTS HIS DUTIES that he was elected to fulfill, including by failing to attend and report to the People and the Navajo Nation Council during the Fall 2023 and Summer 2024 Council Sessions as required by law.

• MISCONDUCT IN OFFICE has occurred by President Nygren and his appointees in the form of sexual harassment, nepotism, bullying, and disrespect of veterans, elders, and women. At least 42 of his appointees have entered and exited his office by resignation or involuntary termination. Throughout the Navajo Nation Government, non-political appointee professionals who held critical positions have also resigned due to the unprofessional behavior that has trickled down from President Nygren to his appointees.

The Committee urges the 2022 General Election Navajo registered voters to sign the Petition to Recall Buu Nygren and get involved in the recall process.

As of today, Navajo Nations President Buu Nygren has not issued any comments on this recall effort.
